My Trip to the Darkside with Hot Wheels x Star Wars for the 2014 Comic-Con
Um, yeah! Childhood dream come true!
Earlier this year I got to work on a special project for Mattel and Lucas Films Ltd., and I have to say it was my summer blockbuster
to say the least. The Hot Wheels and Star Wars brands joined forces to create the ultimate ride for a trip to the darkside; a life-size
Darth Car complete with an LS3 engine, 526 horsepower, custom red line tires and heavy-breathing sounds from Vader himself.
I had the pleasure of doing some transmedia storytelling and create a BMW-style commercial for the car when it rolled into
San Diego’s Comic-Con International to promote the amazing Star Wars™ inspired Hot Wheels® character cars and a world
of replica die-cast starships and play sets that will be in stores in time for the holidays.
This has got to be one of the coolest projects I’ve ever worked on in my entire career as a creative professional. To be asked
to come up with something for the Star Wars franchise, and help Hot Wheels do it right for the legions of hard core fans,
was a humbling experience. The creative development was challenging, and the production even more so, but in the end
I was honored to jump through hoops to make this project come to life and launch this important partnership for both.
Here is the final video:
This video was only possible because of the talented design team at Hot Wheels and the crew at Picture Car Warehouse
(PCW) who brought the design to life and did the dark sith lord justice.
Here is the behind-the-scenes making of video for a real-life Hot Wheels car.
Mucho Mahlo to Windowseat for having me on board for the ride of a lifetime.
